Cooking School? Make it at Paon!! PDF Print E-mail
Save ReviewPuspa and Wayan must be congratulated on making their cooking school the great success that it is! It is well organised, informative, and best of all a really fun way to spend a day in Ubud. Wayan and Puspa pick you up from your hotel at the appointed time and you start with a visit with Puspa to the markets, where she keeps up and extremely informative and amusing commentary on all that is to be bought in the fruit and vegetable market - it's a wonderful experience to shop with a local and find out all those things that you don't know how to ask about when your Indonesian is as bad as mine!
Wayan picks you up at the end of the market tour and takes you back to their home compound - then off to look at his family rice paddy and hear a bit about how rice is grown and the responsibilities of a village member before returning to their lovely home compound to begin cooking lunch. Puspa is a natural teacher who soon gets everyone involved in learning to cook Bali-style. Both Puspa and Wayan speak excellent English --- and there are lots of laughs and fun in the cooking process. The outdoor kitchen is immaculate and the food is really delicious. Puspa limits her class numbers because she doesn't want anyone "just looking, looking" as she put it! and I think this is one of the keys to her success! You get copies of all the recipes to take away with you so you can recreate the food at home. We loved the whole experience guys, and hope to return again next year to learn to make some different dishes to add to our repertoire.
